Why Sex Is Healthy for Aging Adults

By Carol White, 9:00 am on January 11, 2016

Though some believe people should have less sex as they get older, it can actually have a positive impact on a senior’s mental and physical health. Prescott senior care experts have put together a list of healthy ways your elderly loved can benefit from having a fulfilling sex life.

It Relieves Pain

Having sex releases a variety of hormones, including oxytocin, which helps reduce stress and make a person more calm. Sexual activity also releases endorphins and serotonin, hormones that promote feelings of excitement and pleasure, which can make your loved one forget about back twinges and sore muscles. Researchers at the University of Münster in Germany also found having sex may help stop migraines and the painful side effects of rheumatoid arthritis.

It Can Help Someone Look Younger

As your loved one ages, having a youthful appearance can boost his or her self-esteem and mental health. Having a healthy sex life is one way he or she can have a more youthful look. A Scottish study done by Dr. David Weeks found couples who had intercourse 3 times a week appeared to look 10 years younger. This study also found having an orgasm releases the sex hormone estrogen in both men and women. Estrogen is known to enhance skin quality and add shine to hair. Also, if your loved one has a great sex life, he or she is more apt to take care of grooming, eat healthier, and exercise.

It Increases Brainpower

Aging adults who regularly have sex can boost their memory. Researchers from the University of Amsterdam did a study with sexually active adult rats, which found the rats experienced a boost in neurons in the hippocampus, a region of the brain that holds memories. The study also found older adults who have regular intimate encounters may also enhance their analytic thinking.

It Fights Prostate Cancer

Having regular sex may reduce the chances of an older man getting prostate cancer. The US National Library of Medicine features a study that states men over 50 who frequently ejaculated lowered their risk of getting this type of cancer. The study also stated regular sex may help flush out carcinogens hiding in the prostate gland, which makes it less likely to become cancerous.

Though sex is a private and personal experience, there are many other ways you can actively help promote your loved one’s wellbeing.
